"BREAK THE SILENCE" by Francois Mulder

COMMUNITY DANCE & MUSIC

About the song

It’s a coincidence that one day I clicked the youtube link of “Break the Silence”, I am obsessed with the song and its meaning, which arouse the awareness of human trafficking, based on the tragic experience a survivor and also the founder of Walk With Me Canada Victim Services, Timea Eva Nagy.

Human Trafficking is the infringement of human rights. It is not the crime committed by some reckless and unrestrained youngsters, instead, it involves organized crime groups that are difficult to be eliminated. Prosecution takes really long time and may be not successful. The victims involve women, men and children, who may be sexually exploited.

I read a book called “3096 days” which is written by Natascha Kampusch, a girl being kidnapped and imprisoned for 8 years, say 3096 days. Though it is not an exact human trafficked case, she had the same feeling of other victims. When her family totally had no leads on her whereabouts, she wanted to scream that she was still alive but she was hopeless like the lyrics of the song: She wanted to be saved, freed and healed.

VERSE 1

She tries to hold on, but no...

She's sinking to the bottom so slow.

The girl she knew yesterday she don't see

when she looks into the mirror,

wipes her tears,

try and wash it all away.

She paints on a smiling face

and tries to forget the last cold embrace.

She wants to run away.

Can't face another day.

She'd rather join the dead than spend the night with strangers in her bed.

and she cries...

CHORUS**

'Break all the silence

and tell the whole world

that they're tearing me apart with their dirty selfish hands

leaving me with nothing at all.

He takes me inside and breaks me apart

As he's pushed up against me my skin begins to crawl

leaving me with nothing at all'

BRIDGE 1

And she cries:'Someone please save me.

Someone please free me.

Will someone please show me that love is still alive

and hope is not lost. And Hope is not lost'

VERSE 2

I will not stop until silence no longer fills

the darkened hotel rooms

where people trade the lives of the

unlucky millions, the defaced civilians:

The mother, the daughter, the brother, the sister, the son.

She'll give her life to make it go away.

Washes his hands but still feels stained.

Who's 'gonna turn their night into day.

and they cry...

CHORUS**

BRIDGE 2

No more, I cannot take this no more.

No more - I can't take it anymore.

No - I can't take it. I can't take it anymore.

OUTRO CHORUS

'Break all the silence

and tell the whole world

that they're tearing me apart with their dirty selfish hands

leaving me with nothing at all.

And as they push up against me my skin begins to crawl –

Sweat of a monster, on my face it falls.

No more. I cannot take this no more.

And she cries: ‘Someone please save me. Someone please heal me’

About the dance
by Mather Dance Company

Music takes a very important role in this dance since it was published before the dance was released. Given that the song literally carries the meanings related to victims in human trafficking, it can be the subtext of the dance. Moreover, the dancers are costumed as the victims of human trafficking, their body movements are mostly acting like they are being controlled and manipulated. They act like they are struggling and they want to be freed. There are not significant matching of rhythm between music and dance, but still, there are some. Nevertheless, the body movements of the dancers increase in extent size when the singer sings chorus 2 and they further extend the movements like pushing and pulling the others when the song reaches the bridge 2: “No- I can’t take it. I can’t take it anymore”, bringing the audience to the climate of the emotions.

Choreographed by Blake McGrath
